Mobile Telco in China


China Mobile Limited 中国移动
China Mobile Limited is the largest of its kind in the world. and a state-owned enterprise, it provides mobile voice and multimedia services through its nationwide mobile telecommunications network,  it is listed on both the NYSE and the Hong Kong stock exchange. 

The most valuable mobile telecommunications company in the world. It has the world's largest mobile phone subscriber base, with over 508 million customers, is the largest Chinese company listed overseas and is the largest telecom in Asia in year 2009.

China Mobile offers mobile services in Mainland China under several brands. 
- Easyown  a basic prepaid mobile phone service that is more heavily marketed in rural areas.
- GoTone the flagship brand.
- M-zone a premium prepaid service, targeting the youth demographic.

China Unicom 中国联通
China Unicom or China United Netcom (Hong Kong) Ltd is a telecommunications operator in China.

China Unicom (BVI) Limited effectively holds 40.92% of the company and China Netcom Group (BVI) Limited holds 29.49%, while the remainder is traded on the Shanghai, Hong Kong and the New York stock exchanges. Both majority shareholders are state controlled enterprises.

China Telecom Corp. Ltd 中国电信
China Telecom Corp. Ltd. is the largest fixed line service and 3rd largest mobile telecommunication provider in China.

China Telecom has the largest single WiFi wireless broadband network with over 30,000 hotspot locations covering hotels, restaurants and transportation facilities in over 250 major Chinese cities including Shenzhen, Nanning, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Dalian, Kunming, Wuhan, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chongqing and Guangzhou.

China Tietong Telecommunications Corporation 中国铁通
China Tietong Telecommunications Corporation former name was China Railcom (China Railway Communication Corporation, Limited). It is a major state-owned basic telecommunications operator in China.

China Tietong is the third largest fixed-line internet service provider in China, after China Telecom and China Netcom. China Tietong's main areas of business are providing ADSL and dial-up internet backhaul on their nationwide backbone network, and the company also has a number of fixed-line telephone subscribers. Lacking access to each home, they work very closely with the cable television provider of each major city and usually offer lower price compared to its competitors. 

It Founded on December 20, 2000, on January 20, 2004 it was shifted from the Ministry of Railways of China to the administration of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, while it was renamed CTT.

China Tietong was taken over by China Mobile Communications Corp, the state-owned parent company of China Mobile on May 23, 2008 . Tietong "will remain relatively independent for the time being according to China Mobile.

Mobile Telco in Thailand

Advanced Info Service
Advanced Info Service PCL is Thailand's largest GSM mobile phone operator with 28.8 million customers as of February 2010. AIS was founded in April 24, 1986 and acquiring Shinawatra Paging in June 1992, the highly profitable company is controlled by the Shin Corporation, headed by Temasek Holdings, a Singapore government owned agency. AIS is listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand on November 5, 1991 (1991-11-05). Singapore Telecommunications holds a 19.15% stake in the company.

Temasek bought AIS and Shin from the ousted Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in early 2006.

Total Access Communication Public Company Limited
Total Access Communication Public Company Limited (DTAC) is the second largest GSM mobile phone provider in Thailand (after AIS). Dtac is owned by Telenor both directly and indirectly. As of 31 December 2009, dtac had 19.7 million subscribers with the market share of subscriber at around 30%.

As of 23 June 2010, the Company's registered capital was Baht 4,744,161,260 of which Baht 4,735,622,000 was paid-up capital and divided into 2,367,811,000 ordinary shares with a par value of Baht 2.

Dtac has won the Best Mobile Operator of Thailand award for three consecutive years (2005–2007) from Asian MobileNews Awards 2007, organized by Asian MobileNews Magazine.


DTAC claims to have the second widest coverage nationwide, compared to its main rival AIS, with 8,300 base stations intstalled as of 2008 on the 800 Mhz and 1800 Mhz bands. As of 2010 DTAC is offering both GPRS and EDGE services on its postpaid and prepaid brands DTAC Happy. Unlimited internet access stands at a price of 999 Baht per month. DTAC has international roaming agreements with 147 countries.

True Corporation Public Company Limited
True Corporation Public Company Limited (TRUE) is a communication conglomerate in Thailand and a subsidiary of the Charoen Pokphand group. True controls Thailand's largest cable TV provider True Visions, its largest ISP True Internet and its third-largest mobile operator True Move.

True Corporation was established in 1990 as TelecomAsia. The firm had a strategic partnership with Verizon. The company was listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand on 1993 (1993-12}22). In 2001, TelecomAsia set up a mobile phone subsidiary with Orange SA. Orange sold off its stake in the venture in 2003 but the Orange brand was still used until 2006.

In an effort to converge all its existing telecommunications related business into a single brand, the company renamed itself True Corporation in 2004 and streamlined its operations with subsidiaries AsiaInfonet (renamed True Internet) and Orange (renamed True Move in 2006) amongst others.It operates fixed-line (as a concessionaire of TOT Plc), wireless, Cable TV, IPTV and Broadband services amongst others.

The company has aggressively pushed itself as an
Internet service provider, a broadband and ADSL network. With more than 1 million subscribers, it is now Thailand's largest ISP.

In 2005, True took a higher stake in
UBC, Thailand's largest cable television provider, and renamed the network UBC-True. On January 24th 2007 UBC-True was renamed True Visions.

Today, True Corporation Public Company Limited, has pushed communication businesses into one brand, "True", promoting the companies in the form of True Convergence.

CAT Telecom Public Company Limited
under the corporate brand "CAT", is the Thai state-owned telecommunications company that owns Thailand’s international telecommunications infrastructure including its international gateways, satellite and submarine cable networks connections. Until recently, CAT had a monopoly on international telephony and CDMA mobile telephony.

CAT partners with sister state-enterprise TOT to provide a GSM mobile service namely ThaiMobile (sold back to TOT in 2008)and with Hutchison namely Hutch to provide a CDMA CDMA2000 1X mobile service in 25 central provinces, while operates its own CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in 51 other regional provinces.

CAT also provides data communications and applications services, e.g., Leased Line, Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTx), Gigabit Ethernet, xDSL, Live TV Broadcast, e-Commerce, e-Auction, e-Security, etc. Over half of its revenue is from revenue sharing of its mobile concessionaires namely Total Access Communication (TAC, dtac Brand), True Move (TM), and Digital Phone Company (DPC, GSM1800 Brand) over the lives of their respective concession contracts, i.e., until 2018, 2013, and 2013, respectively.

Mobile Telco In Malaysia

Celcom Axiata Berhad
Celcom Axiata Berhad is the oldest mobile telecommunications company in Malaysia. Celcom is one of a member of the Axiata group of companies. Being one of the very few companies in Malaysia to originally obtain a cellular phone license, it successfully introduced mobile telephony in Malaysia through its ART-900 (Automatic Radio Telephone) service, using first generation (analogue) ETACS (Extended Total Access Communication System) specifications of the United Kingdom, a derivative of the US-AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System) technology. The ETACS ART-900 was started using the prefix "010". Celcom now uses the dialling prefix identifier of "013" and "019" and offer digital GSM (Groupe Speciale Mobile), an originally European standard, now largely a world standard for mobile communications. The original frequency band for GSM is 900 MHz, and was soon extended to 1800 MHz to cater for a much wider bandwidth requirements.

Through the Mobile Numbering Portability by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, CELCOM also provides Virtual Mobile Operator services. Celcom also provides rural communications services using CDMA Technology and Satellite Phone.

Celcom claims to have the widest and most extensive coverage nationwide, compared to other cellular services in Malaysia. Celcom claims its dual-band GSM (900/1800 MHz) coverage has reached over 97% of Malaysia's populated area in 2006, and 100% through satellite coverage. As of 2006 Celcom is offering both 2.5G and 3G services on its postpaid and Xpax prepaid brands. Current (published) customer base passes over 10 million, with blended ARPU (Average Revenue per User) stood at RM65. Celcom claimed a 95% nationwide mobile service coverage with 3G availability in most of Klang Valley, Johor Bahru, Melaka, Kulim and Penang.

In 2009, the 3G coverage covers most major towns where there is a telephone exchange and either HSDPA or EDGE services within 15 mile radius (GSM UMTS maximum allowed range) with GPRS as basic data coverage.

Maxis Communications Berhad
established 1993, publicly listed 2002.

Maxis Communications Berhad is a leading mobile phone service provider in Malaysia. It was started in the year 1995. It uses the dialling prefix identifier of "012" , "017" and “0142”. Their mobile services are provided over the 900 & 1800 MHz GSM band and as July 2005, the 2100 MHz UMTS band.

Maxis provides a variety of mobile communication products and services. They offer prepaid call plans, monthly subscription plans, global roaming, MMS, WAP (over both GSM and GPRS), Residential Fixed Line services, Broadband Internet plans, and as of early 2005, 3G services to both prepaid and postpaid subscription customers.

For business customers, Maxis offer VSAT services (satellite based communications) and BlackBerry based mobile services besides regular services. Maxis also provides an online Music store for its customers to download multimedia content.

Maxis most popular service is its prepaid brand Hotlink, which currently serves over 8 million customers in Malaysia. They are currently heavily promoting a new IDD 132 service, which offers discounted calls to landlines in selected countries, at a rate of 20 sen (roughly 6 US cents) per minute which is, at certain times for many subscribers, even cheaper than a local call.

Maxis is currently involved in a price war with its competitors (particularly DiGi) in the prepaid SIM market which has driven its Hotlink starter pack prices down to RM6 (about USD$1.2).

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd
Founder 1995, Publicly listed 1997, known as Mutiara Swisscom Bhd. The name of DiGi Swisscom Bhd., the holding company of DiGi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd., was changed to DiGi.Com Berhad. in 2000.

DiGi Telecommunications is a mobile service provider in Malaysia. It is owned in majority by Telenor ASA of Norway with 49%. On 24 May 1995 DiGi became the first telco in Malaysia to launch and operate a fully digital cellular network.

They were also the first to offer GPRS (2.5G) and later EDGE (2.75G) in Malaysia in 14 May 2004. DiGi primarily uses the GSM1800 band with the network code of 50216.

DiGi is listed on the Bursa Malaysia under the Infrastructure category.It uses the native dialling prefix identifier of "010", "016", "0143", "0146" and "0149", although with the implementation of Mobile number portability mandated by the Malaysian government this does not apply to subscribers who switched from their old mobile service provider over to DiGi. At the moment, switching to DiGi is free.

It provides a variety of mobile communication services. These services include voice under their prepaid plans & postpaid plans, SMS, data plans and services, international roaming, international calling card and WAP services.

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd. started a project called 'Happy'. A group of DiGi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd. staff handle this special project and provide a new brand of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) called Happy Prepaid.

DiGi is also the second operator in Malaysia to offer the iPhone on April 1, 2010. Although its plans are cheaper than Maxis's iValue plans, the price of the iPhones sold are higher than Maxis

DiGi is the first Telco in Malaysia to introduce Mobile Number Selection service which was implemented in 2008. This service enable the subscriber to choose their own number instead of following the traditional way of purchasing a new SIM that has been pre-assign with fix mobile number.

U Mobile Sdn Bhd
U Mobile Sdn Bhd is Malaysia’s newest 3G service provider and was founded in 1998 as MiTV Networks Sdn Bhd. U Mobile is a wholly owned subsidiary of U Television Sdn Bhd which was formerly known as U Telecom Media Holdings Sdn Bhd and MiTV Corporation Sdn Bhd.

Utilising the 018 prefix allocated to the organisation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) , U Mobile seeks to enrich the lives of consumers by making communication, entertainment and information easily accessible through advance technology via one convenient, ubiquitous platform.

In addition to offering mobile telephony and mobile data, U Mobile intends to be Malaysia’s first ever true mobile TV service provider with its Mobile LiveTV service that utilises internationally accepted Digital Video Broadcast – Handheld (DVB-H) technology . U Mobile targets to commence its mobile service and Mobile LiveTV user trial before the end of 2007.

Based on Bloomberg's feed, KT Freetel, one of U Mobile's foreign investor, has announced that it is selling its 16.5% stake (62.6 million shares) to U Mobile’s major shareholder.

Telstra Corporation Limited
Telstra or Telstra Corporation Limited (often abbreviated as Telstra Corp) is an Australian telecommunications and media company, formerly owned by the Australian government and privatised in stages from the late 1990s. Telstra is the largest provider of both local and long distance telephone services, mobile services, dialup, wireless, DSL and cable internet access in Australia. Telstra's headquarters are located at the Telstra Corporate Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

Formerly Telecom Australia, the company was renamed in 1993 under the brand of Telstra. It was privatised in stages between 1997 and 2006.

Optus Communications Pty Limited
SingTel Optus Pty Limited is the second largest telecommunications company in Australia, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Telecommunications . The company primarily trades under the Optus brand, while maintaining several wholly owned subsidiary brands, such as Virgin Mobile Australia and Boost Mobile in the mobile telephony market, Uecomm in the network services market and Alphawest in the ICT services sector.

Savvy Communications (Aust.) PTY LTD
Savvytel is a mobile phone company based in St Leonards, New South Wales, Australia.

Savvytel began offering prepaid mobile phone access at rates lower than traditional carriers because, under the Telecommunications Act 1997, Savvytel are able to obtain a licence to purchase airtime at a rate lower than the carrier while still able to make a profit. Further, Savvytel was the first mobile phone company in the world to offer call credits that never expire.

In 2007, Savvytel introduced a range of cap plans that include calls to landlines (including over 200 international destinations), mobiles, SMS (national and international), voicemail and 13, 1-300 and 1-800 Numbers.

Vodafone Australia is a mobile telephone company, a subsidiary of Vodafone Hutchison Australia. Vodafone Australia was formerly a wholly owned subsidiary of Vodafone Plc (which is based in the UK).

On the 10th of June 2009, after ACCC approval, Vodafone Australia merged with the Australian subsidiary of Hutchison 3G (known by its '3' brand) to become Vodafone Hutchison Australia Pty Ltd, owned by Hutchison Telecommunications Australia (a subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa) and Vodafone Group PLC on a 50-50 basis.

Virgin Mobile Australia
Virgin Mobile Australia (VMA) is a telecommunications company based in Sydney, Australia. They sell through over 3500 retail outlets, including flagship stores in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as via telesales and web-based stores.

VMA offers pre-paid, monthly and CAP plans for mobile phones. It also has two wireless broadband products: Broadband At Home and Mobile Broadband.

M1 Limited
M1 Limited (previously known as MobileOne) is a telecommunications company in Singapore. Launched in April 1997, it was Singapore's second mobile operator after SingTel and then StarHub was the Singapore's third mobile operator. It is currently Singapore's smallest mobile operator, in terms of number of subscribers.
