Encased in a nicely slimmed-down version of the familar Pearl body, this BlackBerry has a conventional numeric keypad, 3G & WiFi - & iPhone-matching 802.1n WiFi at that.
The Pearl 3G also has BlackBerry's trademark email system, which remains painless to set up, reliable & swift. Even though the Pearl's keypad means you have to type emails SMS-style, it's still better than its rivals overall.
The SureType predictive text is efficient, offering spot-on suggestions quickly so you can text at speed. However, despite looking more modern, the touch-sensitive trackpad isn't quite as reliable as the original Pearl's trackball.
BlackBerry IS 5 looks a little dated, but the Pearl has the same processor as the top-of -the-range BlackBerry Bold 9700, so it's at least zippy & responsive.
The 2.25-inch screen is pokey compared to the touchscreen devices here. However, it's bright sharp & readable in anything short of direct sunlight, while the reduced size helps the battery life, which is the best on test & means you won't need to charge up every day.
The BlackBerry App World is more corner shop than megastore, with fewer than 7,000 apps. Multimedia is nothing to write home about with a 3.2-MP camera with LED flash being the high point.
