icrosoft’s drive to get more developers on to its Windows Phone 7 platform, it was giving away free ebooks to help developers master the skills needed to develop for Windows Phone 7. And if Apple is now doing the same, offering 6, yes 6, ebooks for free, to get developers up to speed on how to develop for iOS, then perhaps it means that new developer sign ups are slowing because people are now more attracted to other competing platforms.
And if the richness of the app ecosystem is an indication of the success of a mobile platform, this is something to be worried about. Well, free is always good, and certainly lowers the barriers to entry to developing in iOS. It is, after all, still the largest in terms of sheer numbers, and the top apps rake in millions.
