With Google's new app Inventor, you don't have to be a legit developer to build an Android app.
Granted the apps you make with this software might not blow anyone away with its awesomeness nor make it into the Android apps store, it could still be something you could give free to friends.
Apparently you never have to write a single line of code. Instead, you design you app visually, by using blocks to control your app's behaviour. You can make use of pre-programmed blocks to store information, repeat actions, communicate with Twitter, access the GPS, or just to make your app do something when in certain conditions.
Technically, how all this can be done is by having the blocks editor use Open Blocks Java library to create visual blocks programming languages. Then, a compiler translates the visual blocks language for implementation on Android. It uses the Kawa Language Framework & Kawa's dialect of the Scheme programming language. This language is developed by Per Bothner & distributed as part of the Gnu Operating System by the Free Software Foundation.
