People always presume that locating a place requires GPS. Not according to RIM, who makes Blackberry devices.
RIM is providing free to developers their new Locate Service to develop apps which use nearby cell tower information to fix a location in seconds. This upcoming service & its apps are useful to users who only require approximate information of a location. Locate Service can also combine with the BlackBerry Maps Service to obtain navigation directors & POIs.
The user has to ask for a location fix via LocationProvider or BlackberryLocationProvider using the appropriate Criteria, or BlackberryCriteria for the Cellsite mode. This can only happen if our local telcos enable such features, & the device must run Blackberry Application Platforms v5.0 or higher.
